Bananas on the Breadboard is a 50 minute documentary celebrating life and traditions in the markets area Dublin. Through a series of interviews with local people and location and archive film, the documentary tells stories from the fruit and vegetable market, the former fish market and Smithfield. It also tells the story of street trading synonymous with this part of the city which many local families, particularly women, have been involved in for generations.
Bananas on the Breadboard was commissioned by people living and working in Greek Street and the general markets area. Funding for the project came from the National Lottery, HARP Community Gain Fund and the Dublin City Council Film Maker in Residence Award 2009. The producers were Fidelma Bonass (Development Worker HSE) Danny Pender (Greek St Resident) and Joe Lee (Film Maker). The cameraman was Michael Doyle. Bananas on the Breadboard was directed and edited by Joe Lee.
Bananas on the Breadboard is dedicated to the memory of the late Tony Gregory, former City Councillor and TD for Dublin North Central, who for all his political career, supported street traders in their struggle for justice, recognition and their right to earn a living.
