To mark the evening of St. Patrick's Day, renowned Irish trad folk musician Dónal Lunny curated, and participated in A Celebration of Irish Voices.
A Celebration of Irish Voices was an opportunity to hear two of Ireland's most important choirs, each of which has its own distinctive style, each of which draws directly from the great well of the Sean-Nós singing tradition. Cór Taobh A' Leithéid was led by Dominic Mac Giolla Bhríde, who himself won the Corn Uí Riada for solo Sean-Nós singing at this year's Oireachtas. The beloved Cór Cúl Aodh was led by Peadar Ó Riada. The Musicians involved in this special event included Kerry based Eithne Ní Chatháin whose captivating voice and assured fiddle playing is steeped in traditional music, sean-nós song and the Irish language. Accompanying Eithne on the night was Ciarán O' Grady on concertina, Seán Óg on saxophone and Cormac OBrien on double bass.
Evoking her Connemara roots and her Egyptian heritage, Róisín Elsafty's haunting performances resonate with politically charged reflections yet embrace the sean-nós tradition while the brilliance of Cór Cuil Aodha has now achieved cult status in traditional circles. To end the evening one of Ireland’s most evocative sean-nós choirs, Cór Taobh A' Leithéid, from Co. Donegal, took to the stage.
This was a colourful and uplifting Irish traditional music experience and an unforgettable night of music and song.
