St. Patrick’s Festival Brings It ‘Home’ for 2018

HOME is the theme for the 2018 edition of the Festival; the exploration of my home, your home, our home. It is the inspiration for the artistic programme that includes a unique film commission project, street-theatre, talks, walks, spoken word, literature, music, Irish language, visual art and more.

St. Patrick’s Festival, funded by Fáilte Ireland, Dublin City Council and the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht returns in full colour, creativity and spectacle to the Capital from March 15th to 19th 2018. The first three events, of this five day festival, revealed are Kormac: Equivalent Exchange which is a premier collaborative concert with DJ, producer and composer Kormac, The Irish Chamber Orchestra and special guests; THISISPOPBABY - Where We Live, a programme of lively discourse, plays, performances and screenings and a special performance by contemporary trad group The Spook of the Thirteenth Lock launching their new album Lockout in The Pepper Canister Church.

Pageant companies will come together from all over Ireland to celebrate the Festival Parade theme Home is Where the Heart Is, as we warmly welcome thousands of people to our Home to celebrate our national holiday.

Specially commissioned by St. Patrick’s Festival , Kormac: Equivalent Exchange, at Vicar Street, on Sunday March 18th, will feature Kormac alongside the Irish Chamber Orchestra, Kormac’s Big Band and an array of 30 musicians and artists, including ArtSoul singer/songwriter Loah and famed composer and conductor Eimear Noone. The creative concept is a new departure for Kormac who has relinquished his usual writing processes to try a completely new approach with a chamber orchestra at his fingertips and a new sonic palette to explore. More guests will be announced in the coming months.

Dublin experimental folk-rock band The Spook of the Thirteenth Lock expands to an 18-piece electric guitar orchestra to launch their new album Lockout in the beautiful surrounds of the Pepper Canister Church on Friday March 16th. Inspired by the recent centenary, Lockout matches Irish traditional sounds with a powerful wall of electric guitars to tell the story of the 1913 lockout and gives insight into Ireland today in the decade of centenaries. It strives to reflect the anxiety and anger of then and now. Performing alongside the Spook will be special guests, vocal harmony group Landless. 

THISISPOPBABY - Where We Live is a kaleidoscope of stories regaling what it feels like to live in Dublin and Ireland today. Told by some of the best storytellers on the island including Mark O’Halloran, Oonagh Murphy, Tara Flynn, Peter Flynn and Veronica Dyas, it investigates ideas around money, housing, migration, gender, community, the city and sex. It is two weeks of theatre productions, work-in progress showings, music, live art and a major exhibition from March 6th to 18th in The Complex in Smithfield.

Speaking about the festival, Ardmhéara Bhaile Átha Cliath Mícheál Mac Donncha said “In celebration of Ireland’s National holiday, Dublin is set for five spectacular days and nights of entertainment from 15th March to 19th March.  I invite people from Dublin and all around the country to engage with our national festival which truly has something for everyone to experience and enjoy.  We extend a céad míle fáilte to all our overseas visitors who will travel to Ireland for the festivities; they will undoubtedly leave with lasting memories of their time spent here.  Táim ag tnúth go mór le Féile Phádraig 2018 - Bliain na Gaeilge. Is í an Ghaeilge croí ár náisiún agus ba chóir dúinn í a chur ag croí-lár ár bhFéile Náisiúnta. St. Patrick’s Festival’s principal funders are Fáilte Ireland, Dublin City Council and the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht. Its aim is to develop a major annual international festival around the national holiday over which the Irish people can stand proud. It reflects the talents and achievements of Irish people on national and world stages, showcasing the skills of every age and social background. The first St. Patrick’s Festival was held over one day, and night, on March 17th 1996.  Preparation used to take five months, but with its subsequent growth, it now takes 18 months to plan for Ireland’s biggest annual celebration.

Over 105,000 out-of-state visitors attended the Festival in 2016, spending an average of 8.8 days in Ireland, and 6.5 days in Dublin.  During the 2015 Festival, out-of-state visitors generated an estimated total expenditure of €73m while in Ireland, including expenditure of €51.3m while in Dublin, and circa €22m which was spent in the rest of Ireland.
