Made In Dublin is a powerful immersive multi-screen surround-sound installation about a city on the move. Built around the Dublin photographs of Eamonn Doyle, with production design by Niall Sweeney, sound by David Donohoe and the voice of author Kevin Barry.
David Donohoe is an Irish musician, composer and artist. A long-time collaborator of Eamonn Doyle, he has composed music and sound for Doyle’s books and exhibitions, notably the END installation at Recontres D’Arles Photo Festival 2016 and the Made in Dublin installation for St Patrick’s Festival 2019.
The Made in Dublin installation in the Dr Tony Ryan Gallery features a quadrophonic audio composition by Donohoe. Comprising new music for FM synthesizer, percussion and processing; the work features six readings by Kevin Barry of texts commissioned for Eamonn Doyle, Made in Dublin (Thames & Hudson 2019).
The K series of images in the main gallery is accompanied by a two-part piece by Donohoe. Constructed from a 1951 recording of an Irish Keen, this densely-layered and ever-changing composition forms an integral part of our experience of K, relating directly to it in both form and expression. Commissioned specifically for this body of work, this composition is included in the K book as a 10” vinyl record.
On Saturday 16th March, David Donohoe will perform solo in the Made in Dublin installation. Part composition, part improvisation this performance will utilize gongs, bells, singing-bowls and other hand-percussion alongside FM synthesizer using custom processing software designed and built for Donohoe by artist Dennis McNulty.
